Top inlaid with blank nameplate, Masonic sqaure and compasses, radiant sun and crescent moon, and five-pointed star within a circle. The lid is framed with triple stringing and a border of alternating mother of pearl and tortoise shell demi-lunes. The marine origin of the tortoise shell and mother of pearl inlay materials would imply that this box was the work of a mariner or craftsman working in a seafaring environment. From: John D. Hamilton. "Material Culture of the American Freemasons." Lexington, Mass.: Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library, Inc., 1994, page 63.
